Reflection: Today is the first Sunday of the Lent. The gospel presents Jesus who endured a forty-day period of temptation from Satan. He was led by the Spirit into the desert. The Spirit was not the source of temptation but the divine agent who brought Him into the situation where His filial fidelity was tested. The purpose of the ‘testing’ was to reveal the depth of His fidelity to God, the Father and it continued to the point of His final agony whereby He was to accomplish the Father’s will. He overcame the temptations by His recourse to the Abba to the last moment of His life. Today temptations take the forms of individualism, relativism, hypocritical religiosity and many more. The modern world projects life with many whims and fancies that hinder our oneness with God and neighbour. Jesus’ life example teaches us that when we are tempted to prove our filial relationship with God, we must reaffirm our fidelity to Him, having great confidence in the Abba. As Christians we are not to run away but face the challenges of life with confidence. Sometimes we may experience the silence of God, but He is there as the Radiant Sun behind the clouds.
