Richard of Wyche, (1197-1253) also known as Richard of Chichester, was born at Wyche (Droitwich), Worcestershire, England. He was orphaned when he was quite young. Richard refused marriage and went to Oxford. He was ordained priest in 1243. Against the wish of the King Henry III he was consecrated as Bishop of Chichester in 1245. He is the patron saint of coachmen.
Reflection: In the first reading the people ask Peter what they needed to do. As it were to give an answer to it the Lord, in the Gospel reading of today’s liturgy, explicitly tells Mary Magdalene what she was supposed to do. The difference lies in this that the people in the first reading were not yet converted whereas Mary was a sinner-turned-disciple. So now she gets the privilege of becoming ‘Apostle of the Apostles’! Yes. If our conversion from the past sinful life is genuine, then we will have not only the joy of sharing the risen life of Jesus but also the privilege of sharing in the common legacy of Jesus Christ’s Father becoming our Father.
